cijin island
this was an awesome place just right across the harbor from kaohsiung. it had great food, stores, old things (cool old fort and light house), and killer beaches. we had a lot of fun spending the day here.
"fo guang shan" the ride!
lights, camera, action! if you go into the cave of wonders at this temple you see something that reminds you very much of the "its a small world" ride at disneyland. its got colorful lighting, disco balls and moving characters.

this temple is amazing and huge and goes on forever. ellen is contemplating life.
linnei butterfly celebration
yes, it is true. the tiny town of linnei is known for something. when the beautiful crow butterflies migrate they make the town of linnei one of their major stops. And this old man with the butterfly wings thought it was sooooo funny that the white people took his picture.

LuGong- this is just a typical Taiwanese town that happens to have the happenings and history of real taiwan.

yes you are seeing this right. yes there are kids dressed as ducks, and yes there are boys in pink cheerleading outfits and shiny frilly shorts, and yes there are schoolgirls doing a sexy dance, and yes everyone has a prop. sports day is absolutelty crazy, insane. every grade had a different dance and a different costume.

there is no way to explain the taiwanese version of sports day. its like elementary field day on steroids. there were many events to compete in and we were all encouraged (that means required) to participate.

giant buddha #2
around the giant buddha was a whole complex of temples, ponds, and gardens. it was all very beautiful.
